TV and tourism

TV has been able to do amazing things for locations just by using them as part of their shows locales. Hawaii Five-0 is a remake of the original that aired in the 70’s. Seeing the gorgeous shots of the beaches and water and other scenery on the island was just as big a part of watching it as hearing “Book em Danno.”
But on the flip side of that does seeing a location that is more “gritty” make you less likely to want to visit that town? ABC is running a police show called Detroit 1-8-7 that might not make you want to rush to get a plane to hang out in Detroit.
These shows and others like them are concerned about their ratings but the tourism boards in cities where television shows are shot either love them or hate them depending on how it affects their efforts. They spend their time trying to portray their citizens as friendly; that they have thriving businesses and are safe. All of this is to attract tourists to visit and businesses to set up shop in their town.
If they have a program filming in the area that shows a less desirable element then they are trying to portray they have their work cut out for them.
So when you watch these shows try to be fair to the town and realize it is television and not everything you see will be accurate. But even with that being said, you’ll never convince me Hawaii isn’t as gorgeous as it looks.
